The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) turns the clock back to Sunday, May 1, 2011 when Indiana University knocked off the University of Michigan by a 5-3 final score in the 2011 CWPA Championship title game at home in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Cassie Wyckoff recorded 12 saves in the title tilt to earn the tournament Most Valuable Player award as the win earned the Hoosiers at berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at Michigan’s Canham Natatorium on May 13-15, 2011.
For Indiana, the story of the title game was the play of its defense as Wyckoff dominated the majority of the contest.
In addition to Wyckoff, Jakie Kohli did not score a point but played a more critical role than accounting for one of Indiana’s goals as she terminated six Wolverines’ possessions by herself via a field block, a steal or forcing an offensive foul to give the Hoosiers the ball and ultimately the program’s second trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship after advancing in 2003.
