MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Abby Warren scored four goals, including a hat-trick in the fourth quarter to keep her team ahead, as host Wesleyan University of the Colonial Division staved off Division III No. 8-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 11-9, to reach the Fifth Place game of the 2018 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship.
The Cardinals, who finished Fifth in the Colonial Division and made the championship field as the host institution, never trailed in the game as Wesleyan built leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first quarter, held a 6-5 lead at halftime, entered the fourth quarter with an 8-7 margin and held off the Tartans with a 3-2 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter thanks to Warren.
Leading 6-5 at halftime, the Cardinals saw their lead evaporate as Vivaan Bahl (Gr., Palo Alto, Calif.) bombed in a shot to deadlock the teams at six-all with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter. However, a five-meter penalty shot by Issac Thorman (2:17) followed by a natural tally from Max Wimer (1:24) pushed Wesleyan ahead 8-6. Carnegie Mellon erased one strike from scoreboard prior to the conclusion of the frame as Joey Santillo (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) slipped a ball into the cage with four ticks on the clock to inch the Tartans within one at 8-7.
From there, Warren took over as she hammered in back-to-back shots at 4:07 and 3:38 of the fourth quarter to inflate Wesleyan’s lead to 10-7. Bahl attempted to reinvigorate his team by converting on a man-up chance at 1:31 to move within 10-8, but Warren answered 15 seconds later to return the spread to three at 11-8. Bahl completed a hat-trick nine seconds later for the final blow in the game.
For the Cardinals, Warren led the way with four goals. Wimer and Thorman both joined her in posting hat-tricks with Dominique Monserrant tacking on a solo tally in support of a four save effort by winning goalie Garrett Kaufman.
The victory places the team on the precipice of Division III Championship history as Wesleyan, which previously finished First (1999, 2004, 2005), Second (2000, 2002, 2003, 2006), Fourth (2012) and Fifth (2008) in nine prior appearances, will attempt to avoid the program’s lowest finish at the event when the squad returns to the water at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, against the winner of a consolation game pitting Division III No. 4/Colonial Division Champion the United States Coast Guard Academy and Division III No. 3/Heartland Division Champion Grinnell College.
Across the tank, CMU received hat-tricks by Jacobian Gobbo (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.) and Bahl to accompany a pair of markers from Kelby Kramer (Fr., Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and a solo marker bySantillo. Santiago Brusseau (Fr., New York, N.Y.) made 13 saves in taking the loss.
The defeat drops Carnegie Mellon into the Seventh Place contest at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 28, as the Tartans will tangle with the fallen from the Coast Guard-Grinnell consolation game. Historically, Carnegie Mellon has previously finished Second (2016), Fourth (2017), Sixth (2005, 2013, 2014, 2015), Seventh (2008, 2010), Eighth (2011) and Ninth (2012) in 10 prior trips to the tournament.
