BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Former Connecticut College men’s water polo athlete Joel Backaler ’06 is making a name for himself in the field of global intelligence and marketing.
A former Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan from 2006-2007 following his graduation from Connecticut College with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and East Asia Studies, he recently assumed the position as Head of Strategy, Global Intelligence Division, at FiscalNote in June of 2023.
A global marketing strategist and author of “China Goes West” and “Digital Influence“, he served as a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations and continues as an member of Boston University’s Global Marketing Management (GMM) Advisory Board Member.
A thought leader who has been featured in/on Forbes, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and The Financial Times, he has worked with many of the world’s top global brands, including: The Coca-Cola Company, Johnson & Johnson, Philips, Cisco and Hewlett-Packard. Further, he has also advised companies from emerging markets on their globalization efforts.
Prior to joining FiscalNote, he served as interim Head of Asia Pacific Operations in Singapore (February 2009-December 2010), Director of Global Marketing and Communications in Washington, D.C. (January 2011-January 2014), Managing Director for Global Marketing and Communications in Los Angeles (February 2014-to-December 2017) and Managing Director in Boston (December 2017-to-May 2023) for FronterView.
He began his professional career following the completion of his Fulbright Scholarship term as a Strategy Consulting Analyst for Atos in Beijing (June 2008-to-February 2009) as the lone expat analyst on a Chinese consulting team serving Chinese corporations seeking to expand into international markets.
