GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team opened the 2022 season with a 16-12 setback to visiting Wittenberg University in non-conference action at James E. Longnecker Pool.

Five Grove City players scored, led by a six-goal outing from senior Elaine Miller (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Junior Michelle Danley (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood) posted three goals and junior Reese Trauger (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) added a pair of scores. Senior Sophia Melanson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) each scored once.

Miller also assisted three goals while Kerr recorded two assists. Danley, Trauger and senior Kyra Johnson (Hamilton, Va./Woodgrove) all tallied assists.

Trauger led the defense with five steals while Kerr and junior Emory Shepson (Grove City, Pa./Homeschooled) each had two steals. In goal, junior Tia Kannel (York, Pa./Central York) made seven saves for Grove City.

Wittenberg, which previously played six games this month, led 6-5 after one quarter and 10-7 at halftime. The Tigers held a 14-10 lead after 24 minutes. Wittenberg is a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Division III West Division while Grove City competes in the East Division.
