ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Division III No. 5-ranked Augustana Vikings women’s water polo team wrapped up a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III weekend in Minnesota by grabbing a 12-6 win over Carthage College before defeating host/No. 7 Macalester College by a score of 14-4.

In game one against Carthage, the Vikings faced early 1-0 and 2-1 deficits before Jillian Hagmann‘s goal brought the teams even. A late strike from Maggie Caliendo with 18 seconds left in the first gave Augustana its first lead as they brought a 3-2 advantage into the second quarter.

Anita Rodgers and Casey Barragan each notched goals in a low-scoring second quarter. Augie held Carthage to just one point through the final eight minutes of the half to move the advantage to 5-3 entering the break.

The Firebirds pulled even with the first two tallies of the third quarter, but consecutive goals from Charlotte Newport and Annelie McGhee put the differential back to two. Carthage added one more before the end of the third quarter to bring Augie’s lead to 7-6 with eight minutes remaining.

The Vikings pulled away with a big final frame by outscoring the Firebirds 5-0 to take the game 12-6. Four different Vikings earned goals in the fourth, including back-to-back points from Hagmann to close out the contest.

Hagmann and Rodgers each snagged three goals to lead the Vikings, while Natalie Abril earned the win in net.

In game two against Macalester, Barragan accounted for the only two goals of a low-scoring opening quarter to give Augie a 2-0 lead after eight minutes. The lead stretched out to five with three more goals in the second as Barragan notched her third of the contest to go along with tallies from Caliendo and Ocean Akau.

Leading 5-0 at halftime, the Vikings continued to score with the second half’s first three goals, two of which came from Barragan. Macalester secured its first goal of the game late in the third quarter after being held scoreless for over 20 minutes of game time. The Vikings maintained separation and led 8-2 after three quarters prior to erupting for six goals in the final eight minutes to nab the double-digit victory.

Barragan finished with 11 goals. Lizzie Pelzman racked up 15 saves in net.
