BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — 120 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) student-athletes earned Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic honors. In total, 449 athletes were honored by the ACWPC for their academic achievements.
Divided into three teams based on cumulative grade point average, league members garnered 38 Outstanding (4.00-3.71), 44 Superior (3.70-3.41) and 38 Excellent (3.40-3.20) honors as 14 institutions submitted nominees for the team in the fourth season of play for the MAWPC.
The total marks an 18 athlete increase over 2018’s 102 athletes. Further, the total is 14 more than 2017 (2017) and a 41 athlete increase over 2016’s total of 79.
In addition, nine of the 34 schools that broke a 3.0 grade point average to earn Team All-Academic recognition compete in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference as Salem University (3.49), Wagner College (3.46), Johns Hopkins University (3.45), Connecticut College (3.23), Mercyhurst University (3.20), Fordham University (3.18), Bucknell University (3.14), George Washington University (3.13) and the United States Naval Academy (3.02) all garnered recognition.
Overall, Salem (fourth), Wagner (sixth), Johns Hopkins (seventh), Connecticut (17th), Mercyhurst (18th), Fordham (19th) and Bucknell (20th-T) all rank among the Top 20 schools in the country for GPA. George Washington (22nd) and Navy (32nd) also rank among the national leaders in academic performance.
To be eligible for consideration, student-athlete’s head coach must be a member of the ACWPC, while the athlete must attain a cumulative grade point average in excess of 3.20.
In total, 199 student-athletes that compete in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) administered league earned recognition as the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) collected 79 (28 Outstanding, 31 Superior, 20 Excellent) laurels.
Further, institutions from East Coast conferences led the Team All-Academic Awards as 15 of 34 schools that topped a 3.0 GPA compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC. Six schools that compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC stand among the Top 10 teams in the country, including four of the Top Five and six of the first seven.
