BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — In light of the discovery that the California State University-Maritime Academy versus Fresno State University women’s game on March 10 was incorrectly recorded on the scoresheet, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) corrects the Sierra Pacific Division standings and announces seeding changes for the division championship tournament on Saturday-Sunday, April 14-15, at the University of California-Santa Cruz.
The game was originally scored and reported as a 14-2 victory by Cal Maritime over Fresno State. However, following a request by Fresno State and analysis of the video stream from the game on the CWPA Network, the league office discovered that the Bulldogs defeated Cal Maritime by the 14-2 score.
Consequently, the division regular season standings and seeding for the championship are corrected.
Due to California State University-Chico, UC-Santa Cruz “A” and Fresno State now all finishing with 5-3 records and not having all played one another, the No. 4, 5 and 6 seeds are decided by goal differential against common opponents seeded higher (University of California-Davis “A” & University of California “A”). As Fresno State finishes with a -26 differential (16-1 L vs. UC-Davis, 17-6 L vs. California “A”) compared to CSU-Chico’s -12 (13-4 L vs. UC-Davis “A”, 10-7 L vs. California “A”) and a -10 by UC-Santa Cruz “A” (13-10 L vs. UC-Davis “A”, 10-3 L vs. California “A”), Fresno State takes the No. 6 seed. The tiebreaker then reverts back to head-to-head as CSU-Chico claims the No. 4 seed due to an 8-5 head-to-head win versus UC-Santa Cruz “A”.
The seeding of CSU-Chico, UC-Santa Cruz “A” and Fresno State at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively, is the same as the previously announced championship format as no changes occur for the three teams.
However, the same can not be said for the No. 7 and 8 seeds as Cal Maritime’s loss drops the team into a tie with the California “B” with 3-5 records.
Per league policy, due to Cal Maritime forfeiting the season-finale to UC-Davis “A”, Cal Maritime finishes behind the California “B” for the No. 7 seed. League policy states, “Note, in the event that a team forfeited a game during the season, that team is eliminated from tie-breaker consideration and is seeded at the lowest position among the tied teams.”
This is a change from the previous championship schedule as Cal Maritime previously held a 4-4 record and was seeded in front of California “B”.
