BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Stanford University climbs two places to become the new No. 1 team in the nation as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2019 Men’s Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Week 2/September 18 Polls.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, which captured the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title, holds on at No. 1 in the Division III Poll, while Bucknell University remains in the top spot of the MAWPC rankings. Harvard University takes over the prime position in the NWPC Top Five following two weeks of varsity competition.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the MAWPC, NWPC, Golden Coast Conference, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), SCIAC and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2019 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 2/September 18)

Stanford University dislodges the University of Southern California to take over at No. 1 in the Week 2/September 18 National Men’s Varsity Top 20 Poll.

The Cardinal (96 points) climb two places to assume the top spot and hold a two point lead over the University of California-Los Angeles (94 points) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (94 points) which are tied for the runner-up berth.

University of the Pacific (84 points) improves two positions to take over at No. 4, while USC (83 points) slides back to No. 5.  Pepperdine University (70 points) and the University of California-Davis (69 points) jump two and four positions, respectively, to assume the No. 6 and 7 slots with the University of California (65 points), Long Beach State University (64 points) and the University of California-Irvine (55 points) completing the Top 10.

The University of California-San Diego (51 points), Harvard University (50 points) and Bucknell University (36 points) account for the No. 11-to-13 spots in front of a four-way tie between Loyola Marymount University (24 points), Princeton University (24 points), St. Francis College Brooklyn (24 points) and George Washington University (24 points) at No. 14.

San Jose State University (18 points), California Baptist University (10 points) Brown University (11 points) and Brown University (9 points) complete the Top 20.

2019 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 2/September 18)

The Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continue as the unanimous No. 1 in the Week 2/September 18 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.

Pomona-Pitzer (100 points), Whittier College (91 points), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (89 points), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (85 points), Chapman University (78 points) and the University of Redlands (77 points) hold firm at No. 1-to-6, respectively.

The first change comes at No. 7 as California Lutheran University (74 points), Occidental College (60 points) and the University of La Verne (57 points) each creep up one position to take over at No. 7-to-9 in front of formerly No. 7 Johns Hopkins University (53 points).

2019 Men’s Varsity Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 2/September 18)

Bucknell University retains the No. 1 spot in the Week 2/September 18 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Poll.

The 2016 MAWPC Champion Bison (100 points) become a unanimous top selection.  2017 and 2018 MAWPC Champion George Washington University (94 points) hangs on at No. 2 in front of Fordham University (91 points) and the United States Naval Academy (85 points) which break out of a deadlock at No. 3 from the Preseason and Week 1 voting to settle in at No. 3 and 4, respectively.

Wagner College (80 points) again rounds out the Top Five.

The MAWPC features 14 teams as Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington, Navy, Wagner, Johns Hopkins University and La Salle University comprise the Eastern Region, with Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, Monmouth College, Salem University, Washington & Jefferson College, Connecticut College and McKendree University competing in the Western Region.

2016 and 2017 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Champion Harvard University supplants 2018 champion Princeton University to take over at No. 1 in the Week 2/September 18 NWPC Top Five Poll.

Harvard (99 points) and Princeton (96 points) trade the top two spots in the rankings with Brown University (88 points) remaining at No. 3..

The final two positions in the Top Five exchange hands as St. Francis College Brooklyn (87 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (81 points) trade for the second time in as many weeks.
