BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of California-Los Angeles holds off the University of California to retain the No. 1 position as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2022 Men’s Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Week 8/October 26 Polls.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Fordham University and Princeton University rate as unanimous No. 1 picks in the Division III, MAWPC and NWPC rankings, respectively, following a week of near and completed upsets.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the MAWPC, NWPC, Golden Coast Conference, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), SCIAC and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2022 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 8/October 26)

The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) stays at No. 1 by a single point in the Week 8/October 26 National Men’s Varsity Top 20 Poll.

UCLA (98 points) holds off a challenge from the University of California (97 points) as the Golden Bears pull within one vote of equaling the Bruins for the lead position in the Top 20. 

However, the majority of the Top 10 experiences a change this week as University of the Pacific (84 points) and the University of Southern California (84 points) rise from No. 5 and 4 to tie at No. 3.  Stanford University (78 points) – which rated at No. 3 last week – slips to No. 5 and hangs on by a vote to remain in the Top Five.

Long Beach State University (77 points) closes to within striking distance of the Cardinal, while the University of California-Davis (69 points) hangs on at No. 6.

Princeton University (68 points) – which claimed its inaugural defeat of Stanford over the weekend – breaks a tie at No. 9 from last week with Pepperdine University – to take over at No. 8.  Pepperdine (61 points) acquires sole possession of the No. 9 berth with the University of California-Santa Barbara (55 points) returning to the Top 10 in the final position.

The University of California-Irvine (54 points) slips to No. 11 with Loyola Marymount University (46 points) and the University of California-San Diego (41 points) remaining at No. 12 and 13, respectively, for another seven-day run.

San Jose State University (33 points) and California Baptist University (30 points) take over at No. 14 and 15 with Harvard University (29 points) backing up to No. 16.

Santa Clara University (20 points) reclaims sole possession of the No. 17 berth with Fordham University (17 points), George Washington University (8 points) and St. Francis College Brooklyn (7 points) again completing the Top 20.

2022 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 8/October 26)

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges retains its prior No. 1 ranking in the Week 8/October 26 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.

The Sagehens (100 points) become a unanimous No. 1 pick in a poll which experiences radical changes for the fourth time in as many weeks.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (92 points) moves up one spot to take over at No. 2 with previously No. 6 California Lutheran University (86 points) marching up the rankings to No. 3.

Occidental College (84 points) drops back to No. 4 with the trio of Johns Hopkins University (75 points), the University of Redlands (75 points) and Whittier College (75 points) deadlocking to share the No. 5 position.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (67 points), Chapman University (65 points) and the University of La Verne (46 points) complete the Top 10.

2022 Men’s Varsity Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 8/October 26)

Fordham University remains the undisputed No. 1 selection in the Week 8/October 26 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Poll.

The Rams (100 points) retain a five-point lead over George Washington University (95 points) with Wagner College (89 points), Bucknell University (85 points) and Salem University (49 points) remaining at No. 3-to-5, respectively.

The Week 8/October 26 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five Poll remains unchanged from the Week 5, Week 6 and Week 7 voting as Princeton University continues at No 1.

The 2018 and 2021 NWPC Champion Tigers (100 points) rate as a unanimous top pick, while 2016, 2017 and 2019 NWPC Champion Harvard University (95 points) hangs on at No. 2.

St. Francis College Brooklyn (90 points), Brown University (85 points) and Iona University (80 points) hold tight at No. 3-to-5.
