BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — USA Water Polo Men’s Junior National Team Head Coach Gavin Arroyo has announced the team roster and coaching staff for the upcoming 19th FINA World Men’s Junior Water Polo Championship. The tournament is set to take place in Belgrade, Serbia this August 5-13, featuring athletes age 20 and under.

Among a heavily-laden California athlete roster, Logan Schofield (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and head coach John McBride of Bucknell University will represent the East Coast as the duo were selected as an athlete and assistant coach, respectively, for the United States at the tournament.

The lone non-Californian on the roster, Schofield is coming off a strong rookie campaign with the Bison of Bucknell in 2016. He saw action in 17 games, recording 15 goals, one assist, three steals and nine ejections drawn.

Earlier this Summer, he helped his team to a Fifth Place finish at the USA National League Championship at William Woollett Aquatic Center, contributing two goals and one assist.

Schofield’s selection to the Junior National Team continues a trend of high-level play in his family. His father, Ed Schofield, was a four year starting goalie for the United States Naval Academy in the 1980s, while uncle Mike Schofield was a four-year veteran for the University of Pittsburgh team.  Mike Schofield would go on to record a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame coaching career at Navy with 32 seasons in Annapolis, including 29 as head coach of the program.

Another familiar face will be on the Team USA bench as McBride will serve as an assistant coach with University of the Pacific assistant coach Joey Hullikson.

McBride has previous Team USA experience, as a goalie on the US National “B” Team in 1993.  The Northeast Zone Olympic Development Team head coach, he has also served as the Southeast Zone head coach.

The United States is in Group A joined by Russia, Greece, Puerto Rico and Iran.  Team USA will open competition on August 6 against Russia at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.  For more information on the event, visit the FINA website by CLICKING HERE.
