NEW LONDON, Conn. — Brianna Harrity (Sr., Jeffersonville, Pa./Germantown Academy) scored four times and April Anderson (Jr., Mill Valley, Calif./Tampalais) posted a hat-trick as the host Camels of Connecticut College collected a 10-8 victory over Grove City College to wrap-up both teams’ slate of games at a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Weekend at the Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium.
Connecticut never trailed in the game as Anderson and Harrity buried shots with 7:05 and 6:25 remaining in the first quarter to push the Camels out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. Brynna Bartlett (Jr., Olive Branch, Miss./St. George’s) answered for the Wolverines at 2:17 to trim Grove City’s deficit in half, but Shannon Cry (Jr., Monterey, Calif./Monterey) ripped in a man-up opportunity with 1:30 left in the frame for a 3-1 lead after eight minutes of action.
Harrity built the lead to 4-1 by bombing a ball into the cage with 5:43 remaining in the second quarter. Grove City attempted to pose a comeback as Abby Spicher (So., Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Abby Jank (Sr., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) finessed in natural scores at 5:29 and 5:10, respectively, to move the Wolverines back to within one at 4-3.
The teams exchanged scores over the remainder of the first half as Cry (3:50) and Spicher (2:48) punched in strikes to keep it a one-goal game at 5-4 going into halftime.
Grove City balanced the scoreboard with 6:22 left in the third quarter as Grace Klimek (Sr., Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) hit the twine, but Harrity netted two even-strength goals (6:07, 26 seconds), Anderson converted on a pair of six-on-five bids (3:53, 1:13 ) and Sophia Soriano (Jr., Summerland, Calif./Cate School) put away an even-strength marker (3:15) to comprise a 5-0 outburst for Connecticut to grab a 10-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The lead would prove to be too much for Grove City to overcome in the final quarter as Spicher cashed in on a power-play opportunity (4:56) prior to Elizabeth Andrews (Fr., Newberg, Ore./Newberg) racking up a pair of natural tallies (3:32, 1:10) to move the Wolverines within 10-8 prior to the final horn.
For Connecticut, Cry added a pair of scores to join Anderson and Harrity in posting multi-goal games. Soriano accounts for the the Camels other marker.
Spicher led Grove City with a hat-trick. Andrews (two), Jank (one), Bartlett (one) and Klimek (one) accounted for the remainder of the Wolverines’ offense.
In net, Sarah Sovia (Sr., Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) earned the win for Connecticut with Mary Frank (Sr., Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) suffering the loss.
