LEWISBURG, Pa. — Host Bucknell University evened its record at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) as the Bison defeated Wagner College, 19-14, in conference action and landed Long Island University, 17-9.
Against Wagner, It was a chippy game with a combined 36 exclusions, 27 of which were assigned to Wagner. Bucknell seized advantage of that deficit and repeatedly found the goal while a man up.
Pier Giorgio Cicchetti led Bucknell with five goals. Four other players each tallied three times.
Bucknell never trailed in the contest, bolting to a 3-0 lead and maintaining comfortable spacing for most of the game.
Minor danger arrived in the second quarter. The Seahawks cut the deficit to one goal at 7-6, 8-7, 9-8 and 10-9. However, Bucknell answered the call and responded with a tally each time before running up a 12-9 halftime lead.
The Bison extended their lead to 15-10 after halftime. Wagner scored once before Bucknell built up an 18-11 margin and coasted to a five score victory.
Bucknell kept the momentum from the morning game rolling into the afternoon with another strong performance as Tyler Hedblad scored four goals – all in the first half – to spearhead the Bison attack in reeling in Long Island.
LIU stuck close to the Bison for a quarter to trail 3-2 after the opening stanza.
Bucknell generated some breathing room by halftime versus the Sharks to lead 8-5.
The Orange & Blue defense clamped down in holding Long Island to four second half goals, while the Bucknell offense racked up nine tallies to snag an eight-score win.
