PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Shannon Quinn (Fr., Lansdale, Pa.) of No. 14-ranked/Mid-Atlantic Division runner-up Pennsylvania State University brought an end to the longest and final game of the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship tournament at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool by burying an even-strength chance with 1:11 remaining in the second overtime period for an 9-8 victory over North Atlantic Division Champion the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 11th Place game.
The Player of the Game, Quinn saved all of her offense for overtime as the first-year tied the score at seven-all in the first three-minute OT frame with a man-up strike prior to netting the game-winning score with 1:11 to go in the second OT period as the Nittany Lions rallied back from a 7-6 deficit 50 seconds into overtime to claim the win.
In a back-and-forth affair in which neither team could muster enough offensive power to pull away from their opposition, it was MIT that jumped out to an early lead.
Hayley Bergman (So., Sunnyvale, Calif.) was the sole player to find the cage in the first quarter as she pumped in a shot with 2:11 on the clock to place the Engineers ahead 1-0.
MIT expanded the lead to a pair 11 seconds into the second quarter as Madeleine Severance (Sr., Brookfield, Mass.) took advantage of an exclusion call against the Nittany Lions with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter to bury a blast as the man-up chance expired. Penn State, however, responded in short order as Alex Stickler (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) cashed in a power-play opportunity at 6:30 and Emily Argentati (So., Reading, Pa.) buried a natural marker with 4:00 on the second quarter clock for a two-all tie at halftime.
Penn State maintained its momentum in the third quarter as Ashley Southwick (Fr., Reading, Pa.) and Sarah Anderson (So., Naperville, Ill.) ripped in back-to-back tallies at the 6:05 and 2:46 marks, respectively, to place the Nittany Lions in front for the first time at 4-2.
Following a score by Cecilia Viggiano (Gr., Palo Alto, Calif.) at 2:16 to move MIT back within one at 4-3, Stickler struck again to once again provide PSU a two-score lead at 5-3 with 1:01 to go in the frame.
However, Severance began the Engineers comeback by beating the clock to bury a shot with one second showing on the scoreboard to shave the margin down to 6-5 going into the fourth quarter.
Stickler attempted to insure Penn State’s lead would last until the conclusion of regulation by converting on a power-play chance 24 seconds into the final frame of regulation to make it 6-4, but Viggiano (4:42) and Sarah Fay (Gr., Palo Alto, Calif.) (3:52) erased the lead and brought on overtime with the teams tied at six-all after 28 minutes of play.
Severance appeared to turn the tide in favor of the Engineers to commence OT as she swished a shot 50 seconds into the inaugural extra three-minute period to place MIT back in front a 7-6. It marked the first lead for the Cambridge-based institution since holding a 2-1 margin with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
Quinn terminated the scoreboard advantage for MIT with 20 seconds left via a man-up strike, but Clare Wieland (So., Lake Forest, Ill.) responded nine seconds later to put the Engineers back in front at 8-7.
However, Penn State dominated the second OT period as Argentati netted the equalizer at 1:31 and Quinn deposited the game-winner 20 seconds later at 1:11 for the difference in the 9-8 win to claim 11th place in the final 16-team championship standings.
For PSU, Stickler led the way with a hat-trick, while Argentati and Quinn both racked up pairs of goals. Anderson and Southwick each accounted for solo scores, while goalie Sofia Viebranz (Fr., Erie, Pa.) posted seven saves.
Severance (three) and Viggiano (two) keyed the MIT attack with Bergman, Fay and Wieland each tacking on single goals. Vivian Zhang (So., San Jose, Calif.) took the loss with seven saves as the Engineers finished in 12th place.
