BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Sierra Pacific Division schedule of games.
The largest division in the women’s collegiate club ranks with 11 teams, the Sierra Pacific Division is comprised of California State University-Chico, California State University-Maritime Academy, Saint Mary’s College (Calif.), the University of California “A’, the University of California “B”, the University of California-Davis “A”, the University of California-Davis “B”, the University of California-Santa Cruz “A”, newcomers the University of California-Santa Cruz “B” and San Jose State University and returning competitor Fresno State University.
Regular season competition begins on Saturday-Sunday, February 18-19, at the Cal Maritime Aquatics Center in Vallejo, Calif., with a 22-game tournament before continuing on Saturday-Sunday, March 4-5, at UC-Davis’ Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, Calif. with another 22-contest event to set the field for the division championship.
All regular season games will need to be played with six minute quarters in order to get all scheduled matches in the allotted available pool times. Additionally, teams will receive three timeouts that are one minute in length as well as one 30 second timeout.
The division champion will be decided a month later as UC-Santa Cruz’s OPERS Aquatics Center, which previously served as the site of the 2016 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship, as the 11 teams converge to battle in 18 games for the 14-game championship on Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9.
Similar to past seasons, the Sierra Pacific Division champion will receive an automatic berth to the 16-team National Collegiate Club Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Created in 2007 when the Pacific Coast Division was split into two divisions, the Sierra Pacific Division has been among the most competitive divisions over the past seasons as four teams (Fresno State – 2007; UC-Davis – 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016; UC-Santa Cruz – 2010, 2012; California – 2015) have captured the title, while six programs have advanced to the division title game (Fresno State – 2007; UC-Davis – 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016; CSU-Chico – 2009; UC-Santa Cruz – 2010, 2012; California – 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016).
On the National stage, both UC-Davis (2012, 2013) and California (2015) have combined to capture three of the past five club championships. Fresno State, which returns to the league following a lengthy absence in 2017, also captured a National Championship as the squad took home the 2007 crown.
