GRESHAM, Ore. — Sofia Caryotakis (Sr., Portola Valley, Calif.) of No. 1-ranked/Sierra Pacific Division Champion the University of California-Davis used a 6-0 scoring run in the first half to build a lead which No. 19/Northwest Division runner-up the University of Oregon could not overcome to pick up a 13-5 victory in the opening game of the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University of Washington at Mt. Hood Community College.
Down 1-0 with 5:14 left in the first quarter following a strike by Oregon’s Sophia Gemelas (Jr., Madras, Ore.), the 2012, 2013 and 2017 National Champion Aggies showed why the program is ranked No. 1 in the nation.
UC-Davis knotted the score at one-all with a man-up tally by Julia Kinsolving (Sr., San Anselmo, Calif.) at 4:31 prior to Dallyce Marglon (Sr., Tracy, Calif.), Hailey Jackson (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Carmen Steinmeier (So., Sunnyvale, Calif.) ticking off back-to-back-to-back even-strength scores at 3:50, 2:32 and 17 seconds, respectively, to grab a 4-1 lead after one quarter of action.
In the second quarter, Caryotakis added to the margin with another even-strength marker at 4:28 prior to ripping in a man-up score with 1:23 on the clock to build UC-Davis’ lead to 6-1.
Oregon chipped away at its deficit prior to halftime as Katie Hansen (Sr., Orange County, Calif.) rifled in a five-meter penalty shot with 52 seconds left prior to swishing a six-on-five opportunity as the clock expired to move the Ducks within 6-3 at the break.
The third quarter belonged to the Aggies as Marglon (4:13), Steinmeier (3:44) and Kinsolving (1:34) pumped in shots to provide a UC-Davis with a 9-3 lead after 21 minutes of competition.
Nicole Daley (Gr., Granite Bay, Calif.) pushed UC-Davis into double-digits on the scoreboard with 5:45 remaining in the fourth quarter at 10-3, but junior Shannon Sullivan pulled Oregon back to within six by stroking a chance into the twine at 4:30 to make it 10-4.
Sydney Preston (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) responded for the Aggies at 4:02 with a man-up tally prior to Sammie Garcia (So., Costa Mesa, Calif.) delivering a Ducks’ counterblow at 3:35 to set the scoreboard at 11-5.
UC-Davis closed out the contest with consecutive goals in the final minute of play as Kinsolving (49 seconds) and Diana Hatamian (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) (14 seconds) chipped in final strikes for the 13-5 final score.
Due to the win, UC-Davis advances into a 9:00 a.m. Pacific/Noon Eastern quarterfinal clash with the victor of a first-round game pitting New England Division Champion Boston College and Texas Division Champion Texas A&M University. Oregon will face the loser of the Eagles/Aggies match-up at 9:50 p.m. Pacific/12:50 a.m. Eastern tonight in the consolation side of the 16-team bracket.
For UC-Davis, Kinsolving led the way with a hat-trick, while Caryotaks, Morgan and Steinmeier each notched pairs of markers. Jackson, Preston, Hatamian and Daley accounted for the remainder of the Aggies’ offense as the quartet each posted solo tallies.
In cage, Kelley Cartwright (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) claimed the win with five saves in the first half prior to Cassidy Crouch (So., Clovis, Calif.) stopping five shots in the second half.
Oregon received two goals from Hansen and single scores from Gemelas, Sullivan and Garcia. Goalie Corinn Canfield (So., Davenport, Calif.) took the loss with eight saves.
