PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Goalie Sachin Okuma (Jr., Santa Ana, Calif.) turned aside 10 shots to claim Player of the Game laurels as Southwest Division Champion/No. 2-ranked the University of California-San Diego marched past New York Division Champion the United States Military Academy, 19-7, to punch the Tritons’ ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool.
- Due to the win, UCSD will square-off with Sierra Pacific Division Champion/No. 4 California State University Maritime Academy at 10:10 a.m. with a spot in the tournament quarterfinals on the line. Cal Maritime won its first round game by dispatching Northwest Division Champion Oregon State University, 16-12, immediately prior to the UC-San Diego vs. Army clash.
- Army will take on Oregon State at 6:20 p.m. this evening as the Cadets will aim to win their next two games and clinch Ninth Place at the championship.
- The Tritons never trailed against Army as the squad opened up leads of 2-0, 4-1 and finally 5-2 in the first quarter prior to widening the gap to 10-2 by halftime thanks to a 5-0 outburst in the second quarter. Leading 15-5 after the conclusion of the third quarter, UC-San Diego sealed the win by pumping in four additional strikes compared to a pair by the Cadets in the fourth quarter for the 19-7 final score.
- Offensively, Graham McClone (Gr., Placerville, Calif.) keyed the Tritons’ more than three-pronged attack by connecting for four markers. Jack Harper (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) chipped in a hat-trick with a trio of tallies, while Andrew Burda (So., Palos Verdes, Calif.), Max Miller (Fr., Rocklin, Calif.) and Andrew Schade (So., Solano Beach, Calif.) notched pairs. Tobias Oliver (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.), Parker Knopf (Fr., Norco, Calif.), Gonzalo Rivera (So., Madrid, Spain), Parsa Ganjooi (Sr., Fremont, Calif.), Malachi Sanders (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Sheldon French (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) accounted for the rest of the damage with single strikes as 11 different players put away shots for the Tritons.
- Across the tank, Sebastian Houng (Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) took point for Army in netting a pair of goals. Jinwon Heo (Sr., Seoul, South Korea), Austin Beam (Sr., Powell, Ohio), Aaron Chough (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.), Thomas Beggs (Fr., Bloomington, Ind.) and Christopher Onorato (Sr., Houston, Texas) tossed in single scores.
