BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2021 CWPA Championship program for the event on Saturday, April 24, at the University of Michigan’s Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The one-day, four-game championship featuring the host/No. 7-ranked Wolverines, No. 20 Bucknell University, Saint Francis University and Mount St. Mary’s University determines the league champion and qualifier to the 2021 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Water Polo Championship slated for Wednesday, May 12, and Friday-Sunday, May 14-16, at the University of California-Los Angeles’ Spieker Aquatics Center.
Seeding for the championship is based on the Wolverines, Bison, Red Flash and Mountaineers regular season league records as Michigan (6-0), Bucknell (4-2), Saint Francis (2-4) and Mount St. Mary’s (0-6) will play out of the No. 1-to-4 spots, respectively.
Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24 as the host Wolverines face the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary’s. Following another opening round game at 1:00 p.m. pitting Bucknell against Saint Francis, the championship concludes with the Third Place (4:00 p.m.) and title (7:00 p.m.) games.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance at the championship is limited. However, the CWPA will stream the entire six-game event on CWPATV.com at a cost of $10 per game or $25 for a weekend pass.
In the history of the league championship, half of the field has played for the league crown as Michigan holds nine titles (2002, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019) and four (2004, 2006, 2011, 2013) runner-up finishes, while Bucknell has twice (1991, 1994) finished second at the league championship tournament. Saint Francis has never advanced to the league championship title game in three prior appearances (2017, 2018, 2019) and Mount St. Mary’s is in the first year of varsity competition for the program.
