WHITTIER, CALIF. — The No. 18-ranked Brown University men’s water polo started its weekend off with wins over Divsion III No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 14-8, and Division III No. 7 Whittier College, 20-10.

“It’s always good to start any trip with wins,” said head coach Felix Mercado. “We got great play from both goalies and offensively a lot of guys contributed. Hoping it carries to our game tomorrow.”

Brown earned a win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 14-8, led by four goals from Gabe Chang and three from Ilias Stothart. Kole Newman led the Bears in goal with 10 saves.

The Bears jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter with goals by Chang, Stothart and Filip Aleksic.

A goal by Stothart to start the second put Brown up 4-1. Two-straight goals by the Stags made it 4-3 but Brown got three-straight goals with two from Chang and one from Berkman to jump ahead 7-3.

Goals by Trey Rogers and Ben Kirshon made Brown’s lead 9-5 and Matt Simko put Brown up 10-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Simko, Stothart, Chang and Daniel Hadar all added goals for Brown in the final eight minutes.

The Bears completed a sweep of the day’s games with a 20-10 win over Whittier.  Hadar, Anderson Todd, Leo Berkman and Stothart all had three goals. Simeon Dong got the win in goal with 10 saves for the Bears.

Brown exploded to start the game, outscoring the Poets 8-2 in the first eight minutes. Stothart finished the first quarter with three goals. The Bears also got goals from Chang, Berkman, Simko, Kirson and Hadar.

Simko scored to start the second, putting Brown up 9-2. Back-to-back goals from Berkman and Hadar made the score 11-3. Hadar’s third goal of the game came to end Brown’s scoring in the second quarter.

The Bears used a 5-1 third quarter to take full control of the game. Todd scored two goals with Berkman, Kirshon and Evan Moore all finding the net as well. Todd, Cole Atwell and Aleksic also scored in the fourth quarter.
