FUKUOKA, Japan — Princeton University alumna/two-time Olympic Gold Medalist goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson ’17 stopped 15-of-20 shots she faced – including a penalty shot – as the United States fought off France, 16-5, to conclude a perfect 3-0 run in Group A competition at the 20th World Aquatics Championships.
Johnson – who turned away 12-of-18 shots she faced as the United States disposed of China, 15-6 – did not play in Team USA’s 9-5 dispatching of Australia as the Americans outscored their group foes by a combined total of 40-16 in the three contests.
Princeton’s Jovana Sekulic (Jr., Belgrade, Serbia/The Episcopal Academy (Pa.)) – who scored once against China and saw limited time in the water (7:34) against Australia – did not compete against France.
The United States – courtesy their group victory – earns a brief respite as the Americans will next be in action on Monday, July 24, at 3:00 a.m. Eastern during the championship quarterfinals.
