BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) and Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) posted scores of 994.857 and 983.714, respectively, to rate first and third among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s water polo conferences in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Report.

The multi-year APR is the average of a Division I athletic program’s single year APR scores over the last four years (2021-2022-to-2024-25).

All 11 MAWPC and NWPC Division I teams recorded multi-year APR scores that far exceed the 930 threshold required by the NCAA for postseason participation.  Further, the sport (including institutions from the West Coast Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Big West Conference) totaled a combined APR of 988 to tie with golf and mixed rifle for the fourth best APR in men’s athletics.  Skiing (992), gymnastics (992) and lacrosse (989) finished first-to-third, with swimming & diving (986), tennis (986), ice hockey (986), cross country (985), fencing (982), volleyball (981), soccer (981), baseball (980), wrestling (979), track & field (978), basketball (971), Football (Bowl Series, 971) and Football (Championship Series, 959) trail men’s water polo.

Among the Top 10 men’s water polo teams in APR, five call the MAWPC home with a pair from the NWPC also making the grade.

Bucknell University, Fordham University, George Washington University and Wagner College of the MAWPC lead the way as the MAWPC quartet join Loyola Marymount University of the West Coast Conference and the University of California from the MPSF in posting perfect 1000 scores.  The United States Naval Academy of the MAWPC shares the No. 7 position with Stanford University from the MPSF as the Midshipmen and Cardinal notched 998 scores, while Brown University and Princeotn University of the NWPC are square with Santa Clara University from the West Coast Conference for the No. 9 spot with scores of 996.

Harvard University of the NWPC and Mount St. Mary’s University of the MAWPC are tied at 13th (994) prior to Iona University of the NWPC (979) and Mercyhurst University of the MAWPC (972) completing the leagues’ presentation among the ranked 28 institutions at No. 24 and 26, respectively.

Among conferences, the MAWPC stands first by a wide margin as Bucknell, Fordham George Washington, Wagner, Navy and Mercyhurst combined for a 994.8571429 score, over three points higher than runner-up the MPSF (991.75).  Brown, Princeton, Harvard and Iona of the NWPC – as league member the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is not factored due to its position as a Division III institution – come in third with a 991.25 score.  The Big West takes fourth place with a 984.667 score, while the West Coast Conference completes the rankings at 983.714.

The NCAA implemented the APR in 2004 to provide a more real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates offer. The team-based metric accounts for the eligibility and retention of scholarship student-athletes by awarding one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
