BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University water polo has added former team standout Candyce Schroeder as an assistant coach.
Schroeder returns to Bloomington after four combined years of coaching experience at California State University Northridge (CSUN) and Durham University in the United Kingdom.
“I want to thank Coach Dodson for this opportunity, I am honored to give back to a school that gave so much to me,” Schroeder said. “My experience as a student-athlete was unmatched and I want to recreate a similar environment for the future Hoosiers athletes. I am passionate about player development and IU provides resources that are virtually unmatched in the NCAA, that make player development possible. I am excited for Indiana to compete with the best programs in the nation. Go Hoosiers, once a Hoosier always a Hoosier!”
In her time at CSUN, she helped the team reach a Top 25 national ranking in her first two seasons. In 2020, the Matadors got off to their second-best start to a season in school history, going 12-4 in their first 16 games.
She was a coach and a player for the 2016-2017 season at Durham University. Schroeder was an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams and helped guide both groups to the British University College Sports (BUCS) National Championship.
Schroeder also played professionally for the Leeds Sharks in the British Water Polo National League where she led the Sharks in scoring in the same year.
“We are thrilled to welcome Candyce back to our program, but now as an assistant coach,” Dodson said. “Candyce not only bleeds Cream and Crimson, she is passionate about making this program one of the best in the county. Her experiences playing abroad, coaching club and coaching collegiately only enhance her ability to help this program reach new heights. Candyce is on board with our vision of the program and our emphasis on player development, making her a perfect fit. We cannot wait to get our Hoosier back in Bloomington.”
Schroeder graduated from Indiana with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2016 and completed a master’s Degree in Science Marketing at Durham University in 2017.
Among the best players in Hoosiers’ water polo history, he compiled 173 goals, 71 assists, 68 steals and 13 field blocks in 114 games with 91 starts during her four seasons (2013-2016) at Indiana. A four-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic and CWPA Scholar-Athlete selection, she was named to the All-CWPA Team three times with Second Team recognition in 2014 and 2015 prior to notching a First Team notice as a senior in 2016.
A First Team selection to the CWPA Championship All-Tournament Team in 2015 and 2016, she garnered ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention laurels in 2016. Further, she posted National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-Tournament Second Team accolades in 2014 after helping the Hoosiers’ capture the CWPA Championship.
During her sophomore season, she helped Indiana win a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) championship and earn a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament bid. The Hoosiers finished in seventh place that season.
Prior to her collegiate career, Schroeder prepped at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, Calif. She guided the Tritons to the 2011 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship as she took home CIF Player of the Year honors. Schroeder also received league MVP, All-County Second Team and All-Southern California First Team accolades in 2011. During her prep career, she racked up two more All-CIF awards and two All-South Coast League selections.
At the club level, Schroeder competed for the SET Water Polo Club where she was a three-time Junior Olympic All-America selection from 2008-2010.
