Bucknell University-vs.-Brown University Scoreheet (PDF)

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The host Bucknell University Bison closed out their 2018 season with a victory as the squad raced out to leads of 3-1 and 5-1 by the conclusion of the first and second quarters, respectively, to drop Brown University, 9-5, in the Fifth Place game of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship at Kinney Natatorium.

The Fifth Place finish restarts an upward trend for the Bison program as Bucknell (16-18, 3-5 CWPA) has placed fourth (2006), fifth (2010, 2016, 2018), sixth (2008, 2014, 2017), seventh (2004, 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015), eighth (2003, 2012), ninth (2000) and 11th (2002) in the many versions of the CWPA/Eastern Championship since 1999.  Overall, the team has now placed fifth (2018), sixth (2017), fifth (2016), seventh (2007) and sixth (2014) over the past five years to consistently rate on the cusp of reaching the league semifinals for the first time since 2006.

In a similar fashion, Brown (16-18, 3-5 CWPA) shows improvement over the past couple of years as the Bears have finished first (2001), second (2003), fourth (2004, 2009, 2012), fifth (2000, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015), sixth (2002, 2010, 2018), seventh (2005, 2016, 2017) and ninth (2011) since 2000.  Over the past five years, Bruno has notched sixth (2018), seventh (2017, 2016) and fifth (2015, 2014) place marks as the program appears to be on an upturn.

Brown, which defeated Bucknell by a 9-7 score in league action on April 14 at Princeton University, never led as the Bison jumped on the scoreboard first and coasted to the win.

Ally Furano (Fr., Stamford, Conn./The Ursuline School) provided Bucknell its inaugural lead of the game as she banged a ball into the cage 33 seconds into the game (7:27) to stake the Bison to a 1-0 margin.  The Bears evened the score at one-all 22 seconds later as Carmen Rosas (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill./James B. Conant) converted on a man-up opportunity with 7:05 remaining on the first quarter clock, but back-to-back even-strength strikes by Furano (3:12) and Colleen Barron (Sr., Darien, Ill./Fenwick) (2:07) turned the tide back in the Bison’s favor to make it 3-1 by the conclusion of the opening frame.

Following a yellow card to Brown head coach Felix Mercado (7:30) and a misconduct for violence call against Rosas (1:15) dotted nearly seven minutes of scoreless water polo to begin the second quarter.  Sarah Mooney (Jr., Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) finally snapped the scoring drought by sweeping in a power-play chance with 1:06 until halftime to make it 4-1.  Bucknell tacked on one more tally prior to the the horn as Player of the Game Marta Considine (Sr., Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) drained her team’s second six-on-five bid of the half’s final two minutes to increase the spread to 5-1 with 30 ticks left on the clock.

Bucknell continued to exploit Brown’s mistakes as Furano fired in a five-meter penalty shot 27 seconds into the third quarter to further bury the Bears at 6-1.  Lexi Atwell (So., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) snapped a 5-0 scoring run by the Bison by notching a man-up strike at 5:51, but Furano put away another penalty shot (4:42) and Emily Konishi (Jr., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) rained in an even-strength bid with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter to build the margin to 8-2 entering the final eight minutes of regulation.

Considine put a bow on the victory and her intercollegiate career with 5:51 to go in the fourth quarter by swishing a six-on-five chance for the Bison’s fifth man-up/penalty shot of the game and a 9-2 lead.

Brown chipped away at its final margin as Riley Hughes (Fr., Evanton, Ill./Evanston Township) connected for a man-up score (5:51) and Jessica Heilman (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo Atherton) zinged home a natural marker (2:18).

Furano led the way for the Bison with four goals, while Considine posted a pair.  Mooney, Konishi and Barron each notched single tallies in support of a six save effort by goalie Manuela Herrera (Sr., Windermere, Fla./Olympia).

Hughes, Rosas, Heilman and Atwell each scored once for Brown with goalie Marisol Dakan (Sr., Pasadena, Calif./La Salle) making six saves in taking the loss.
