ERIE, Pa. — The Bucknell University women’s water polo team opened play at the Mercyhurst University Invitational by splitting its first two matches. The Bison began the day with a 9-7 loss to George Washington University, but rebounded for a 17-5 win over host Mercyhurst.
Emily Konishi combined for 11 points between the two contests, posting a game-high four goals in the win over the Lakers along with six assists and one score against the Colonials.
Marta Considine and Colleen Barron totaled four goals apiece on the day, while Shyla Lintz, Katie Nedrow, Nina Benson and Savannah Weaver posted multi-goal performances.
Manuela Herrera started both matches for the Bison in cage, finishing with 14 saves, including 10 against Mercyhurst.
In Bucknell’s contest against George Washington, the Bison matched the Colonials’ scoring output in three of the four periods. The difference was in the second quarter, as George Washington outscored Bucknell 2-0.
The Bison had it going offensively against the Lakers in the second game, scoring 10 goals through the first two periods to hold a 10-2 advantage at halftime. Bucknell did not look back, adding three goals in the third quarter and four more scores in the final period.
