RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University seeks a head women’s water polo coach.  The individual performs the following duties personally or through subordinate workers:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Understand and abide by the mission of CBU and the CBU Athletics Department.
  2. Instruct student-athletes with sound principles and expertise in the areas of in skills development, training, and strategies to achieve individual and team success
  3. Oversee and plan competitive intercollegiate practices and competitions that focuses on the development of the student-athletes and success of the program,
  4. Responsible for the academic progress and success of student-athletes.
  5. Has a working knowledge of rules and regulations for the sport, conference, and NCAA, and implements these rules on a consistent basis.
  6. Students will receive instruction and guidance that will lead to positive values, acceptable behavior, and self-discipline consistent with the philosophy and mission of CBU Athletics.
  7. Motivate team for maximum performance by utilizing motivational philosophies that meet the needs of the student and that are consistent with the CBU Athletics program philosophy.
  8. Responsible for submitting the program’s annual budget to the Athletic Director and accounting of all team expenditures to ensure compliance with annual budget.
  9. Develops in each student-athlete a respect for university property and its care.
  10. Within the framework of the CBU and NCAA policies, recruit and evaluate qualified prospective student-athletes who have the ability to be successful academically and athletically.
  11. Display good sportsmanship in relationship with students, staff, officials, and opponents as consistent with NCAA policies regarding the principle of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.
  12. Maintain up-to-date information of sport regulations, rule changes, and NCAA policies.
  13. Maintain and submit all required institution, conference, and NCAA forms and records on time as instructed by policy and the compliance office.
  14. Works with the Athletic Director and sport supervisor in setting goals and objectives for the Athletic Department. Acts in a wise and prudent manner within all aspects of the program.
  15. Assists in the recruitment and selection of staff personnel and in the development of roles and responsibilities.
  16. Respond to all administrative correspondence in the requested timeframe and attend all staff meetings.
  17. Adhere to all institutional, conference and NCAA by-laws and regulations.
  18. Ensure the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes. Establish and ensure a safe environment for student-athletes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises Athletic Assistant coaches and other Athletic leaders. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Knowledge of assigned sport coaching methods.
  • Ability to travel, including domestic/international air travel, and work nights, weekends, holidays.
  • Able to be a positive representative of the University at all times.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to effectively arrange home and away contests according to institutional, conference and NCAA requirements and submit travel paperwork and NCAA pass lists on time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit. Use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment could be moderate to loud.

Education and/or Experience

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; and one to two years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Secondary level athletic experience preferred. Previous coaching experience at college level, NCAA level preferred.
