2019 Men’s Collegiate Club Southwest Division Schedule

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2019 Men’s Collegiate Club Southwest Division schedule.

Comprised of Arizona State University, California State University-Northridge, San Diego State University, the University of Arizona, the University of California-Irvine, the University of California-San Diego “A”, the University of California-San Diego “B” and the University of San Diego, the Southwest Division will contest its 20th season as Arizona (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009), the University of Colorado (1998, 2001), Arizona State (2008, 2010), San Diego State (2016, 2017) and UC-San Diego (2018) have combined to claim the previous 19 titles.

The division’s competitive format is comprised of two regular season tournaments and the championship weekend where all teams attend all three events. During the regular season, teams play every opponent once and one opponent a second time which is randomly selected. It was determined that when a team plays another team twice during the regular season, the first match will be considered exhibition while the second match will count towards a program’s league record. This was imposed in the interest of fairness when drawing the random selection of the additional games and incorporated during the 2018-19 school year. The division membership voted to maintain this rule for the 2019 season.

Competition begins on Saturday-Sunday, October 5-6, at UC-Irvine’s Crawford Pool in Irvine, Calif., as the teams will compete in a 16-game weekend.  The regular season comes to a close on Saturday-Sunday, October 19-20, at Arizona’s Campus Rec Pool as the squads reconvene for 16-games to establish the seeds for the Southwest Division Championship tentatively on Saturday-Sunday, October 26-27.

As of August 26, the championship location and times are being finalized.  UC-San Diego has the ability to host on October 26-27, but pool availability limits the start of the schedule until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.  San Diego State is interested in hosting, but confirmation of the facilities availability has yet to be received.  Teams and fans should check the CWPA website for additional information in early September.

The victor of the division championship earns an automatic berth to the 2019 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship slated to be hosted by the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Friday-Sunday, November 15-17.
