BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending National Champion the University of Southern California remains the undisputed top team in the country as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2019 Week 1/January 23 Women’s Varsity National Top 25, Division III Top 10, CWPA Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III), the University of Michigan (CWPA Top 10) and Macalester College (CWPA Division III Top Five) also retain top-billing in their respective rankings.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), the Golden Coast Conference, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Big West Conference, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the CWPA based on the cumulative results of the season, the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2019 Women’s Varsity National Top 25 (Week 1/January 23)

The University of Southern California, which captured the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, retains the title of top-ranked team in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Varsity National Top 25 Poll.

Overall, the first five positions in the Top 25 remain unchanged as USC (100 points), Stanford University (96 points), the University of California-Los Angeles (92 points), the University of California (88 points) and Arizona State University (81 points) remain at No 1-to-5, respectively.

The first change from last week’s Preseason Top 25 comes at No. 6 as the University of California-Irvine (80 points) shatters a tie with the University of Hawaii (76 points) to acquire sole possession of the spot after the two squads were tied seven days ago.

University of the Pacific (71 points) and the University of Michigan (70 points) hang on at No. 8 and 9, respectively, while previously No. 17 the University of California-Santa Barbara (60 points) moves up seven spots to crack the Top 10 in the final position.

Long Beach State University (58 points) and Princeton University (53 points) remain locks at No. 11 and 12 with previously No. 10 the University of California-Davis (52 points) backing up to No. 13.

San Jose State University (46 points) rises six places to No. 14, while Loyola Marymount University (42 points) and Wagner College (31 points) rate at No. 15 and 16.

Fresno State University (30 points) breaks into the Top 25 at No. 17 to stand in front of Indiana University (26 points) and Harvard University (26 points) which slide and rise into a tie at No. 18.

Marist College (23 points) and the University of California-San Diego (22 points) take over at No. 20 and 21 with the duo of San Diego State University (20 points) and California State University-Northridge (20 points) tying at No. 22.

California Baptist University (16 points) and previously unranked Azusa Pacific University (13 points) complete the Top 25 in the final two slots.

2019 Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 1/January 23)

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges continues its reign as the dominant small college team in the nation as the Sagehens once again top the Women’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.

The Sagehens (99 points) fall one vote shy of ranking as the unanimous top Division III team for the second time in as many weeks as the Division III rankings experience minor changes after the first weekend of the 2019 season.

California Lutheran University (96 points) stays at No. 2, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (87 points) breaks a tie with Whittier College (87 points) at No. 3 from the Preseason Poll to acquire sole possession of the berth. 

Whittier, Chapman University (80 points), the University of Redlands (74 points), the University of La Verne (70 points) and Macalester College (67 points) rate at No. 4-to-8, respectively, with Connecticut College (57 points) and Occidental College (37 points) exchanging the final two berths to complete the Top 10.

2019 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 (Week 1/January 23)

Defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan remains a favorite to repeat as the Wolverines are again a unanimous top pick in the Women’s Varsity CWPA Top 10 Poll.

Michigan (100 points) holds an eight-point lead over preseason No. 3 Princeton University (92 points) as the 2018 CWPA Championship runner-up inches ahead of Preseason Poll No. 2 Harvard University (91 points).

Bucknell University (86 points) and Brown University (80 points) complete the Top Five, with the quintet of George Washington University (75 points), Saint Francis University (71 points), Macalester College (65 points), Connecticut College (59 points) and Carthage College (45 points) accounting for the remainder of the Top 10.

2019 Women’s Varsity Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Top 10 (Week 1/January 23)

Due in part to no competition among the teams to date during the 2019 season, Macalester College, which captured the 2017 and 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships, retains its rating at No. 1 in the CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

Macalester (100 points), which joined Grove City College (2010-2012) and Connecticut College (2013-2016) as the sole teams to ever claim the CWPA Division III league crown, becomes a unanimous top selection this week after holding 99 points seven days ago. 

The remainder of the Top Five stays the same as Connecticut  (95 points), Carthage College (89 points), Washington & Jefferson College (67 points) and Monmouth College (49 points) round out the rankings.
