Comprised of California State University-Chico, California State University-Monterey Bay, California State Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), San Jose State University, Stanford University, the University of California, the University of California-Davis, the University of California-Merced, the University of California-Santa Cruz and University of the Pacific, the Sierra Pacific Division will contest its 11th season in the CWPA with UC-Santa Cruz (2011), California (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021) and Cal Maritime (2019) combining to claim all 10 previous championship titles. The 2020 season was not contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Action commences on Saturday-Sunday, October 1-2, at Cal Maritime in Vallejo, Calif., as California, San Jose State, UC-Davis, UC-Merced and the host Keelhaulers clash in 10 games.
The remainder of the regular season schedule is currently eliminated as UC-Santa Cruz informed the league office on September 28 of the institution’s inability to host water polo games on the previously agreed to dates and times on Saturday-Sunday, October 8-9, and October 15-16.
The Banana Slugs were slated to host Chico State, Pacific, Cal State-Monterey Bay and Stanford for a 10-game event on October 8-9 prior to welcoming all 10 Sierra Pacific Division teams for a 20-game weekend on October 15-16. The league office is currently seeking alternative host sites for two pair of canceled UC-Santa Cruz weekends.
The results from the trio of regular season tournaments were to establish the seeds for the 15-game Sierra Pacific Division Championship penciled in for Saturday-Sunday, October 22-23, at Cal Maritime.
The victor of the division championship earns an automatic berth to the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship slated to be hosted by an institution in the Northwest Division on Friday-Sunday, November 11-13. Further, the team which finishes in the middle of the final Sierra Pacific Division standings will have the opportunity to compete at the inaugural National Invitational on a date and at a site to be determined against teams that claimed the top spot in the lower half of their divisions.
