CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Kyle Sandell (Mountain View, Calif) led the way for the Division III No. 6-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers by scoring a total of 12 goals as MIT split defeated Austin College, 16-11, and fell to Wagner College, 16-9, on the final day of the 2021 Brown University Bruno Classic.
Competing at Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool across town in Cambridge as the Crimson eight games of the event on Saturday-Sunday, September 4-5, MIT pulled out to an early 3-1 lead on two goals by Sandell and another by Jack King (Los Alton, Calif.). However, Austin rifled home three straight to take a 4-3 advantage before Richard Yun (Irvine, Calif.) put away the equalizer with 1:08 remaining in the first quarter.
The second quarter remained a tightly contested affair before MIT went on a 3-0 to pull ahead 9-6 on a goal by senior Kaden Dimarco (Eugene, Ore.).
Austin tied the match in the third quarter, however, the Engineers responded to score the next five goals and pull ahead 14-9.
The Engineers added goals by Dimarco and John Steele (Old Greenwich, Conn.) down the stretch to secure the 16-11 victory.
Sandell led the way for MIT with five goals in the contest, while King followed with three markers. Yun, Dimarco and Miller Geschke (Los Alton, Calif.) all finished the game with two goals apiece.
MIT was unable to engineer another victory against Wagner.
Sandell opened the scoring for the Engineers at 6:38 and followed with another goal at 6:04. Wagner scored the next three to pull ahead 4-2. Geschke stopped the Wagner run with a goal with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter.
A 7-0 run by the Seahawks made it a 11-3 contest and Sandell once again stopped the run with a score at 1:16 in the second quarter.
Wagner continued to hold off the Engineers in the final two quarters, despite three more scores from Sandell who led the way with goals goals. The seven goals scored is a new career-best for the senior.
