CASSVILLE, W.Va. — Division III No. 9-ranked Johns Hopkins University outscored Gannon 6-1 over the final 11 minutes to rally for a 13-10 win at the Salem Invitational hosted by Salem University at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. The Blue Jays improve to 4-2 on the season while the Golden Knights slip to 3-2.
Gannon jumped out to a two-goal lead before a Daniel Palfi six-on-five goal started a 3-1 spurt. Senior Ian Raley capped the spurt with a five-meter goal to tie the game with 6:32 to play in the second quarter. Alexandros Kotskar and Petar Markovic scored back-to-back goals for the Knights to put them back on top 5-3 four minutes later.
Another Raley five-meter goal, followed by a Chris Lo advantage goal tied the game at five at the half. Gannon opened the third quarter with three straight goals to push out to an 8-5 lead less than three minutes in. Freshman Andrew Lee halted the run with a six-on-five goal at the 3:23 mark.
Markovic pushed the lead back to two just 22 seconds later, but it was all Hopkins over the final 11 minutes. Sophomore Owen Bartlett answered Markovic’s score at 2:38 and then Raley knotted the game at nine-all with a penalty score at the 1:14 mark.
Sophomore Alec Baker opened the fourth quarter with a five-meter score to give the Blue Jays a 10-9 lead, their first of the game. He pushed the lead to two with a six-on-five goal just 19 seconds later. Ben Fribourg cut the lead in half with a five-meter goal at 4:40. That would be the Golden Knights’ final score of the night. Baker scored his third straight goal with a six-on-five at 2:24 and Raley then converted another penalty shot to make it 13-10 with 1:11 to play.
Raley scored a game-high four goals and drew two ejections. Baker finished with a hat trick, three drawn ejections, four steals and a block. Sophomore Ethan Babel handed out three assists while Lee scored twice to go with four drawn ejections.
