NEW LONDON, Conn. — Macel Reising (Jr., Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored five times and Paige Adams (Fr., Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) deposited a hat-trick as the Division III No. 9-ranked Washington & Jefferson College Presidents vetoed the Utica College Pioneers, 15-4, at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Weekend hosted by Connecticut College at the Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium.
In a game which saw the Presidents build leads of 4-1 and 7-1 at the conclusion of the first and second quarters prior to outscoring the Pioneers 4-1 and 4-2 in the span of the third and fourth quarters, Washington & Jefferson never trailed in coasting to victory.
Reising and Adams combined to garner their teams first three goals. W&J opened the scoring 20 seconds into the game as Reising found the back of the cage (7:40) prior to Adams (6:46) netting another even-strength strike prior to and Reising (4:42) putting away a five-meter penalty shot (4:42) to make it 3-0. Liz Klock (Jr., New Lennox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) inflated the lead to 4-0 less than a minute later at 3:51 prior to Utica’s Courtney Kennedy (Fr., Smithtown, N.Y.) putting her team on the board with 1:25 left in the first quarter to make it 4-1 at the break.
The second quarter was more of the same as Reising sandwiched a man-up from Brittney Patterson (Sr., North Wales, Pa./North Penn) at 5:14 by cranking in shots at 6:17 and 3:28 to make it 7-1 at halftime.
The offensive onslaught continued in the third quarter as Klock, Sarah Latzo (Sr., Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) and Patterson ripped in back-to-back-to-back even-strength scores at 6:18, 4:42 and 4:10, respectively, prior to Adams converting on a six-on-five bid at 1:55 to increase the spread to 11-1. Rebecca Merrill (Fr., Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) snapped W&J’s 7-0 scoring run dating back to the second quarter by finishing a chance with 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter to move the Pioneers back to within nine at 11-2 with a quarter left to play.
Kirsten Yatsko (So., King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion), Amanda Borwegen (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Reising added nails at 7:39, 5:57 and 4:48, respectively, to push the spread to 14-2. Utica then shaved its deficit down to 11 at 14-3 as Kennedy (4:48) and Krystiana Rehrig (Jr., Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) (4:24) burnt W&J for scores 24 seconds apart. However, the lead proved to be too much to overcome in the final four minutes as the squads exchanged scoring blows with Adams (4:00) and Rehrig (3:34) landing shots with a 26 seconds span for the 15-4 final.
Besides Reising and Adams, the Presidents received pairs from Patterson and Klock to go along with single markers by Latzo, Yatsko and Borwegen.
Across the tank, Rehrig led Utica with two goals, while Kennedy and Merrill both tickled the twine once.
