BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Gabrielle Jones (Jr., Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), goalkeeper Sanjana Venkatesh (Sr., Irvine, Calif./Northwood) and Isabel Kim (So., San Diego, Calif./The Webb School) of Division III No. 9-ranked Emory University combined for 24 goals, 12 assists, 25 steals, eight field blocks and 35 saves during a 3-1 weekend for the Eagles at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to share status as the March 2 Women’s Collegiate Club Southeast Division tri-Players of the Week.
Emory – which defeated the Georgia Institute of Technology (13-1 W), the University of Florida “B” (9-7 W) and the host Crimson Tide (10-9 W) to accompany a loss to No. 8-ranked the University of Florida “A” (16-4 L) – will next be in action on Saturday-Sunday, April 4-5, at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., for the Southeast Division Championship.
The Eagles – which did not compete during the two prior regular season tournaments at Florida in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday-Sunday, February 7-8, and Florida State on Saturday-Sunday, February 21-22 – dropped their first game at Alabama on Saturday, February 28, as Florida “A” rolled to a 16-4 victory. Kim (two goals) and Jones (one goal) accounted for seventy-five percent of Emory’s scoring in the game with Venkatesh taking the loss in cage.
Emory got on track versus Georgia Tech as Kim and Jones both scored three times, while Venkatesh chipped in a solo marker in a 13-1 victory.
On Sunday, March 1, Kim (two goals), Venkatesh (one goal) and Jones (four) accounted for seven of the Eagles’ nine tallies in a 9-7 defeat of Florida “B”. In both teams’ weekend/regular season finale, Kim (four goals), Jones (two goals) and Venkatesh (one goal) all found the back twine as Emory claimed a 10-9 win against Alabama. Venkatesh’s goal proved to be decisive as the netminder rifled home a shot with one second left in the fourth quarter to prevent overtime.
