LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University women’s water polo head coach Jay O’Neil announced the hiring of Tim Sherwood as an assistant coach. Sherwood was a player-coach for the men’s club water polo team at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, where he was Heartland Coach of the Year after the 2015 season. Sherwood also was a three-time conference player of the year during his career at Grinnell.
“We are extremely excited to have Tim joining the Red Flash Family,” said O’Neil. “Tim brings with him a wealth of experience at the college and high school level. His energy will surely affect the team in a positive way right away. He has hit the ground running and we are both very excited to see how this group of talented athletes will compete this year and beyond.”
Sherwood comes to Loretto after serving as a player-coach at Grinnell where he brings a wealth of experience in both men’s and women’s water polo. A four-time collegiate club All-America selection at Grinnell with First Team honors in 2014 and 2015 following Second Team recognition in 2012 and 2013, he claimed three division Most Valuable Awards (2013, 2015: Heartland Division; 2014: Great Plains Division) during his collegiate career to accompany four First Team All-Conference nods and the men’s 2015 Heartland Division Coach of the Year award. Further, he helped develop eight All-Conference selections while coaching the women’s club team at Grinnell.
“I chose Saint Francis because of the close-knit nature of the University and team,” said Sherwood. “SFU is steeped in history, and I loved the idea of returning to the unique environment that a small, rural campus provides. Red Flash Water Polo is on the rise, and I cherish the opportunity to contribute to their continued success.”
Following graduation from Grinnell, he returned home to Seattle, Wash., where he coached high school water polo at Roosevelt High School. In 2017, he led the Roughriders to the Washington state title game, their highest finish ever. Additionally, Sherwood assisted with the boys swim team at Roosevelt.
