FUKUOKA, Japan — Former University of Michigan athletes Abby Andrews, Amy Ridge and Sofie Pontre ’21 M ’22 combined to shoot one-for-six as Australia fell to Spain, 12-10, in the semifinals of the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Due to the setback, Australia will conclude its participation at the championship on Friday, July 28, at Midnight Eastern against Italy in the Bronze Medal game.  The Netherlands edged Italy, 9-8, in the other semifinal as the Dutch and the Spaniards will tangle at 5:00 a.m. Eastern on July 28 in the title game.

Spain jumped out to an early lead in the game by outscoring Australia 5-2 in the first quarter.  The Aussies chipped away at their deficit to move within 8-6 by halftime, but Spain kept pace with their foe the rest of the way as the teams both scored twice in the third and fourth quarters to set-up an all-European final.

Andrews connected on one-of-four shots in the loss by putting away a man-up tally in 19:33 of action.  Ridge shot zero-for-two in 20:08, while Pontre played 3:21 and was held without a shot.
