FUKUOKA, Japan — Former University of Michigan athlete Abby Andrews converted on two-of-four shots by finishing two-for-two on penalty shots and snagged a steal as Australia overcame Israel, 16-7, to claim a berth in the quarterfinals at the 20th World Aquatics Championships.
Australia will face Greece at 5:00 a.m. Eastern on Monday, July 24, seeking a semifinal position.
Andrews – who played for Michigan in 2019 – helped Australia outscore Israel 7-2, 4-1 and 3-1 in the first, second and third quarters, respectively, prior to the Israelis holding a scoreboard advantage in the final frame with a 3-2 margin.
Among fellow former Wolverines, Amy Ridge – who competed for Michigan in 2016 – shot zero-for-four with a field block, while Sofie Pontre ’21 M ’22 did not compete.
