2022 Gannon University Men’s Water Polo Schedule

ERIE, Pa. — The Gannon University men’s water polo team, which is coming off two postseason titles in 2021, will open the 2022 season with a road tournament on September 3.

The Golden Knights, coached by Shane Unger, won their fourth consecutive Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division II championship in 2021 and claimed their second title in three years at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-West Region Championship. Gannon also claimed its inaugural victory at the MAWPC Championship on the way to a program-best sixth place in the tourney.

This year’s team will open the season with four games at Brown University’s Bruno Classic on September 3-4 in Providence, Rhode Island. The Knights face the United States Air Force Academy and the host Bears on the opening day, followed by 2021 MAWPC Champion Fordham University and Saint Francis College Brooklyn on the second day.

Gannon will then dive into its home pool at Cathedral Prep’s David Hallman Aquatics Center during the Erie crossover weekend, hosted by Mercyhurst University, on September 24-25. In their opening match, the Golden Knights face Johns Hopkins University, whom they upset in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championship tournament last season. It was Gannon’s first win ever in that tournament. Gannon also will face Mount St. Mary’s University, George Washington University and Bucknell University.

The Golden Knights compete in the Penn State Behrend Invitational in Erie on September 30-October 1 before going on the road October 8-9 for a crossover weekend hosted by Salem University in Morgantown, W.Va.. The Knights battled the United States Naval Academy, Fordham and Wagner College during the weekend in the Mountain State.

On October 15-16, Gannon travels to Cambridge, Mass., for the Harvard Invitational hosted by Harvard University with games against Brown, Penn State Behrend, Connecticut College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the docket.

That sets the stage for the CWPA Division II Championship, which Gannon will host on October 22-23 at the Hallman Aquatics Center.

McKendree will host a CWPA weekend on November 5-6 in Lebanon, Ill., where Gannon will face the Bearcats, Salem and Mercyhurst.

The Knights conclude regular-season play at Penn State Behrend on November 12, prior to the MAWPC Championship on November 18-20 at Fordham in the Bronx, N.Y.

Head coach Unger was highly decorated last season, claiming Coach of the Tournament honors at the CWPA Division II and Mid-Atlantic Western Region Championship tournaments. He was also named the Division II Coach of the Year by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

Gannon, which finished 14-10 last season, welcomes the return of Drago Marjanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/North Allegheny (Pa.)) and Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla), who were named as honorable mention All-America selections by the ACWPC. Marjanovic led Gannon with 51 goals and tied for the team lead with 73 points. Mickic ranked third on the team with 34 goals. Goalies Jacob Hollo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) return to defend the cage.
