Indiana University-vs-Bucknell University Scoresheet (PDF)

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Goalie Jessica Gaudreault (Sr., Ottawa, Ontario/St. Joseph) stopped eight shots, including a pair of five-meter penalty shots, as the No. 14-ranked Hoosiers of Indiana University overcome a resilient home squad from Bucknell University in the opening round of the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women’s Varsity Championship at Kinney Natatorium.

Indiana (25-7, 5-3 CWPA) never trailed in the game, but needed a strike by Karrie Kozokar (Jr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter and some luck down the stretch to outlast the Bison and punch the program’s ticket to a semifinal date at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, against the victor of a second round game pitting No. 10 Princeton University versus No. 23 Harvard University.

Tied at three-all following the first half of action, the two teams continued to slug it out in the third quarter as Sarah Myers (Sr., Toronto, Ontario/Humberside) howitzered in a shot with 2:57 to push the Hoosiers back in front at 4-3.  However, the lead lasted for just 30 seconds until Shyla Lintz (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) laced in a man-up chance at 2:27 to knot the score at four-all.

Unable to pull away from Bucknell (13-18, 3-5 CWPA) over the span of the first 24-minutes of competition, Indiana once again regained the lead to open up the fourth quarter as Kozokar punched in the eventual game-winner 42 seconds into the final frame.

Gaudreault and the Indiana defense made Kozokar’s strike stand-up as the squad turned back a Bison man-up bid with 2:21 on the clock and stymied all other Bucknell scoring attempts to hang on for a one-goal victory.

Similar to the second half, the first half was marked by a back-and-forth style of play that allowed Indiana to acquire leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-1 prior to Bucknell storming back to balance the scoreboard by halftime.

Joelle Nacouzi (So., Montreal, Quebec/College Charlemagne) broke the ice for Indiana in the first quarter by taking a feed and fluttering in a shot with 6:10 on the clock to make it 1-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.  Following an equalizer by Bucknell’s Marta Considine (Sr., Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) at 4:54, Indiana went back in front as Kozokar ripped in a shot at 3:51 to make it 2-1.

The Bison had a chance to pull even prior to the conclusion of the opening frame, but Gaudreault stoned a five-meter penalty shot at 2:01 to allow her team to exit the first eight minutes of competition with the narrowest of advantages on the scoreboard.

Kozokar padded the lead to 3-1 with 4:40 to go in the second quarter as the Hoosiers began to inch away.  Following another failed five-meter penalty shot against Gaudreault with 3:55 to go in the first half, Bucknell evened the score prior to intermission as Colleen Barron (Sr., Darien, Ill./Fenwick) converted on a man-up chance (3:10) and Emily Konishi (Jr., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) flushed an even-strength bid with 58 ticks on the clock to deadlock the squads at three-all and set-up the climatic second half.

For Indiana, Kozokar led the way with a hat-trick, while Nacouzi and Myers both notched solo markers as the Hoosiers improved to 3-0 on the year against Bucknell following earlier 11-8 (March 24 at Saint Francis University, Loretto, Pa.) and 11-5 (April 8 at Harvard, Cambridge, Mass.) victories.

The quartet of Considine, Konishi, Barron and Lintz each scored once for the Bison. Goalie Manuela Herrera (Sr., Windermere, Fla./Olympia) took the loss with seven saves.

The loss drops Bucknell into the consolation side of the championship bracket as the home team will square-off with Saint Francis University, which fell to Harvard by an 11-3 final score in the opening game of the weekend, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.  A victory over the Red Flash will place the Bison into a consolation game against Harvard at 7:30 p.m. with a berth in the Fifth Place game on the line.
