BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — George Washington University completed a 4-0 weekend at the Salem Invitational hosted by Salem University at the Bridge Sports Complex as the Revolutionaries eluded Fresno Pacific University, 19-11, Gannon University, 15-8, Division III No. 4 Johns Hopkins University, 10-8, and the host Tigers, 16-10,
The victories improve GW to 8-4 on the season.
On Saturday, September 12, the Revs got the weekend rolling with a 19-11 defeat of Fresno Pacific. The Revolutionaries carried a narrow 10-8 lead into halftime, but began to exert their defensive dominance in the second half, limiting FPU to just three scores in the final 16 minutes while pulling away on the offensive end. GW’s all-time record versus Fresno Pacific improved to 7-0.
Four Revolutionaries finished with multiple scores as Yam Kabakov (five), Konstantinos Kapragkos (four), Antonio Florena (two) and Joseph McCreary (two goals) combined for 13 markers. Goalkeeper Solt Horvath made nine saves to help pick up the sixth win of his rookie season.
The Revolutionaries needed a quarter to find their footing against Gannon, but once they did there was no turning back. Down 4-2 in the second quarter, GW rattled off seven straight goals to take control of the match. From there, GW managed the clock and ball effectively to improve its all-time record over Gannon to 18-1.
Kapragkos (four goals, two assists), Kabakov (three goals, two assists), Gabriele Molfino (two goals, two assists) and Austin Nelson (two goals, one assist) all enjoyed multi-point outings, while Horvath blocked a weekend-high 11 shots and had five steals.
GW opened play on Sunday, September 13, with a defensive battle against Johns Hopkins, and in a similar script from Saturday’s nightcap versus Gannon, the Revolutionaries’ endurance was the difference as they held the edge in play during the second half. Tied at four-all after 16 minutes, the Buff & Blue outpaced the Blue Jays, 3-2, in the third and fourth quarters to secure a 10-8 win for GW’s 23rd consecutive win over Johns Hopkins.
Kapragkos led GW’s offense with four goals, followed by Kabakov with three tallies and Nelson with a solo marker and two assists. Horvath finished with nine saves.
After going down 5-2 early to Salem, George Washington once again found their legs in the second quarter to acquire a 7-6 lead by halftime. The second half brought more success the Revolutionaries’ way as the Revs outscored the home side by a 9-4 count in coasting to a 16-10 win. The victory marked the program’s 13th consecutive win versus Salem dating back to 2014.
Nelson led GW in points with three goals and four assists in the weekend finale, followed by Kapragkos with five goals and one assist. Horvath made 10 saves to bring his weekend total to 39.
