BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Hayden Carlson (Jr., South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) of George Washington University is among three women’s water polo players to earn 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar status in the latest edition of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

Carlson, who did not compete in 2020, joins Riley Agerbeek of San Jose State University and Georgia Vargas of Siena College as the only three water polo athletes – either men or women – to earn recognition as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars.

Recipients are lauded by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education to honor students of color who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
