WASHINGTON, D.C. — George Washington University’s John Alvarino of Men’s Rowing and Noah McKinnie Braun (Sr., San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) (Men’s Water Polo) were honored as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars of the Year in their respective sports. The annual awards are presented by the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education to honor student-athletes exemplifying the highest standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism.
Alvarino helped GW’s third varsity eight to a third-place finish in the third-level final at the IRA Regatta and a No. 15 national ranking as a junior last spring. In the classroom, the New Jersey native has compiled a 3.52 cumulative GPA as a Finance Major, including a 3.80 mark in the fall semester, and earned a spot on the IRA All-Academic Team. He’s also logged 28 hours of community service.
Braun aided GW’s run to its first Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference title and NCAA berth last fall, closing his collegiate career with 91 points on 48 goals and 43 assists. The senior from California is a four-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic honoree with a 3.50 cumulative GPA. He’s also put in 35 ½ hours of community service.
The magazine considered more than 1,000 nominations across 34 sports before handing out the honors named after tennis great Arthur Ashe, Jr. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically, maintain a 3.2 or better cumulative GPA and be active on campus and in their community.
