TORONTO, Ont. — The Grove City College women’s water polo team concluded its season-opening five-game trip to Ontario with a 16-5 setback at the University of Toronto. Earlier in the trip, the Wolverines earned their first win of the season by downing the University of Guelph, 18-6, on Friday, March 1 after taking a 13-10 setback against Carleton University on Tuesday, February 27.
Seven Grove City players scored in the victory at Guelph. Freshman Shastyn Tihansky (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) fired in five goals, while junior Mikayla Zablocki (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) and sophomore Kiley Sill (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) both scored four times.
Freshman Carolyn Marks (Milford, Ohio/Milford) scored twice. The Wolverines also received goals from senior Clarie Lochstet (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin), junior Sam Logue (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) and junior Riley McCullough (Spring, Texas/Oak Ridge).
Tihansky also tallied four assists while Lochstet and Marks each assisted on three goals. Logue, McCullough, Sill, Zablocki and senior Katie Goodwill (Mogadore, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) also had assists.
Lochstet and Tihansky both recorded four steals. In goal, sophomore Lea Steen (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) made nine saves.
Grove City led 7-2 after one quarter, then pushed the lead to 10-2 by halftime.
The Wolverines led Carleton at halftime, 8-6, but the hosts outscored Grove City 7-2 in the second half. Tihansky scored five times while McCullough and Sill both scored a pair of goals. Junior Kamryn Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) added a goal, along with two assists.
Zablocki led Grove City with three assists while Sill assisted on two goals. Lochstet also recorded an assist. Steen and Tihansky each had three steals. Steen stopped 10 shots.
At Toronto, Zablocki scored twice while Goodwill notched a goal and two assists to help pace the offensive attack. Lochstet and McCullough also scored. Logue added an assist. Steen stopped seven shots.
