FUKUOKA, Japan — Hartwick College alumna Katie McKenty ’18 capped her participation at the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, by scoring four goals on as many attempts to help power New Zealand to a 25-6 victory over former Lindenwood University athlete Hanna Muller, Bucknell University’s Boati Motau (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa/Roedean School South Africa) and the rest of the South Africa national team.
New Zealand put the game out of reach in the first half as the squad outscored South Africa 7-0 in the first quarter and posted a 6-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter to hold a 13-3 lead by halftime. The margin continued to balloon in the second half as New Zealand connected on six goals in both the third and fourth quarters, while holding South Africa to totals of one and two markers, respectively.
McKenty made her 15:40 of playing time count by swishing four-of-four scoring chances by drilling in three action shots and a penalty shot. She finished as her team’s second highest scorer in the game as Emmerson Joy Houghton converted on seven-of-seven scoring tries to combine with McKenty for 11 of New Zealand’s 25 goals in the game.
For South Africa, Motau shot zero-for-one in 13:11 of action, while Muller cashed in on one-of-four shots by putting away one-of-three man-up scoring tries and missing a bid from center in 24:02 of competition.
