CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard University seeks an Assistant Manager of Aquatics who under the direction of the Aquatics Manager will lead and manage the overall operations at the Malkin Athletics Center (“MAC”) pool, one of two pools operated by the Recreation department within Athletics. Responsibilities include leadership, programming, and operations of the MAC pool.

Overall operations include:

  • Managing a large staff of lifeguards and monitors, including hiring, scheduling, training and supervision. Some employees are full-time, union members; many are contingent workers (part-time workers and students). Ensure adequate staffing for recreational programs, Varsity athletes and special events. Ensure compliance with University staffing and payroll policies;
  • Overseeing pool operations, including scheduling, facility maintenance and improvements, policy development and enforcement, equipment procurement and maintenance; and
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including the State Health Code for pool safety and operations.

Individual will also play a key role in managing the overall operations of the Blodgett pool, an Olympic-sized pool that is the home of our Varsity Men’s & Women’s Swimming, Diving and Water Polo teams. Blodgett operations include the same functions as at the MAC pool as well as planning and preparing for numerous events, including Ivy League championships, Special Olympics, Club competitions, and some national/ regional championships.Evening and weekend work is required and will have on-call responsibility. Pools are open up to seven days per week, 18 hours per day, 360 days per year and serve a wide variety of customers, including Varsity athletes, faculty, staff, students, alumni and visitors.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. Must have at least 2 years’ experience managing and supervising people. Must have current, valid Lifeguard certification. 

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in Aquatics management and Lifeguard Instructor Certification strongly preferred.
  • Should have a strong track record of successfully managing a large staff, including hiring, scheduling and motivating employees to work in a setting that is open many hours, including nights and weekends. Experience running a business operation. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, including the ability to work with and relate well to a diverse group of employees, customers, athletes, administrators, and University constituents. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Must be willing and able to work nights and weekends. Schedule will vary according to the needs of the Aquatics program. In rotation with Aquatics Manager, will be on-call during non-work hours to handle emergency situations and to ensure proper staffing levels.
