SAN JOSE, Calif. — No. 9-ranked San Jose State University received pairs of goals from Mateja Bosić, Jamie Steingraf, Giancarlo Marquez and Eric Ellison as the Spartans defended their house with a 14-3 defeat of George Washington University in SJSU’s home-opener.
San Jose never trailed in the game as the home team opened up a 3-0 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter prior to outscoring the Revolutionaries by a 5-2 count in the second quarter to pull ahead 8-2 entering halftime.
The Spartans continued to rampage on the offensive end in the second half by outscoring George Washington 3-1 and 3-0 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, in rolling to an 11-goal victory.
Bosić led the Spartans with five points (two goals, three assists), while Steingraf, Marquez and Ellison also posted pairs of strikes. Mitchell Keightley, Hamish Bonnar, Louis Fehrensen, Bence Szabo, Luke Burns and Erik Duesund all scored once.
Austin Hexter tallied two assists in the match to accompany solo helpers from Connor MacMillan, Steingraf, Bonnar, Szabo, Zac Newman and Duesund.
Brendon Gyapjas saved 12 shots and only allowed two goals to earn the win in cage for San Jose State. Alexey Poletaev, came in towards the end of the third quarter and recorded five saves with one score permitted in the closing minutes of the contest.
The game marked the first time San Jose State held an opponent to three goals or less since SJSU defeated the University of California-Merced by a 20-3 tally on September 10, 2023.
Andrija Sekulic (Sr., Belgrade, Serbia/Savremena Gimnazija), Adonis Vlassis (Jr., Athens, Greece/Lycee Franco-Hellenique Eugene DeLacroix Athens) and Andrei Khudiakov (Fr., Mason, Ohio/William Mason) combined for the Revolutionaries trio of scores as the team shot three-for-31 from the field, including zero-for-six on man-up bids and zero-for-one on penalty shots.
On defense, Luca Castorina (Gr., Catania, Sicily/Liceo Galileo Galilei) stopped six shots and snagged three steals while going the distance in cage for George Washington.
