BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Rising sophomore Mollie Williams (Sutherland Shire, Australia/Meriden) of Indiana University was selected to the Australia squad for the upcoming 2017 World University Games. The event is set for August 18-30 in Taipei, Taiwan.

One of only two athletes from universities in the United States to make the team by joining Tori Morrissey of California State University-Long Beach (Long Beach State University), Williams is coming off an all-star inaugural season in Bloomington.

A 2017 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Honorable Mention and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Conference Second Team selection, Williams joined the Hoosiers at the semester break and led a potent freshman class with 42 goals and six hat tricks, adding 27 assists and 46 steals to the season effort. She led Indiana with 26 drawn exclusions and notched eight field blocks.

As the regular season reached its final stretch, Williams slipped into a goal-scoring groove. She finished 16 of her goals in the Hoosiers’ last two regular season weekends, marking season highs of four goals against both Princeton University (April 8) and George Washington University (April 9). Williams recorded at least one goal or one assist in 27-of-31 games this year, leading all Hoosiers in the feat.

The University Games, also known as the Summer Universiade, is the world’s second largest international athletic event, double the size of the Winter Olympics and bigger than the Commonwealth Games.

Featuring more than 20,000 athletes from 170 countries, the University Games are a crucial stepping stone for emerging young stars striving for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
