BALTIMORE, Md. — Johns Hopkins University men’s water polo athlete Jake Pearson (Sr., Key Biscayne, Fla./Ransom Everglades) was one of four student-athletes among the 81 Hopkins students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa last month. Joined by senior Evelyn Chang of women’s tennis, Yosef Ellis-Rech of wrestling and Arianna Konstantopoulos of women’s soccer, Pearson was inducted into this prestigious group on May 20.

Phi Beta Kappa, the first society to have a Greek letter name, was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary to foster and recognize excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. The Johns Hopkins chapter, known officially as the Alpha Chapter of Maryland of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, was established in 1895.

Members of Phi Beta Kappa have demonstrated high academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to the liberal arts. Only 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. These chapters select only 10 percent of their arts and sciences graduates to join. The membership includes 17 U.S. Presidents, 42 U.S. Supreme Court Justices and more than 150 Nobel Laureates.
