PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Player of the Game Madeleine Severance (Sr., Brookfield, Wisc.) scored with 4:41 remaining in the fourth quarter to break a five-all tie as the North Atlantic Division Champion Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers edged No. 12-ranked/Atlantic Division Champion the University of Virginia in the consolation round of the 2017 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Joe C. Trees Pool.
Courtesy the win, MIT advances to a second round consolation game at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, as the Engineers will meet the winner of a game pitting New York Division Champion Columbia University-vs.-Heartland Division Champion Washington University in St. Louis. If MIT downs the Lions/Bears, the team will earn a berth to the Ninth Place game at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. A loss against Columbia/Washington University will place the Engineers into the 11th Place game at 3:30 p.m.
MIT ran out to a 3-1 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter as Hayley Bergman (So., Sunnyvale, Calif.) scored twice (6:23, seven seconds) and Alex Obrand (Fr., Montreal, Quebec) finished a shot with 2:18 on the clock to surround a tally by the Cavaliers/Wahoos’ Madeleine Keach (Charlottesville, Va.) at 3:26.
Sarah Fay (Gr., Palo Alto, Calif.) and Severance expanded the spread to 5-1 within the first four minutes of the second quarter as they tickled the twine with tallies at 6:29 and 3:14, respectively. Virginia closed the gap between the teams down to three prior to the end of the half, however, as Keach cracked a shot into the cage with 1:02 until halftime to inch her team back within 5-2 before the break.
The goal ignited a 4-0 outburst by the Atlantic Division Champions as Jessica Fairly (Mechanicsville, Va.), Olivia Sheffer (Harrisonburg, Va.) and Caitlen Moser (Oakland, Calif.) followed with back-to-back-to-back even-strength goals with 6:36, 5:13 and 4:04 on the third quarter clock, respectively, to balance the scoreboard at five-all and set-up Severance’s game-winner in the fourth quarter.
For MIT, Severance and Bergman both scored twice with Fay and Obrand accounting for their team’s other pair of markers. Goalkeeper Vivian Zhang (So., San Jose, Calif.) earned the victory with six saves.
Keach led the way for Virginia with two goals. Fairly, Moser and Sheffer each tacked on solo markers and goalie Ellen Beauchemin (Fairfax, Va.) took the loss with eight saves.
The defeat drops Virginia into a 9:50 p.m. 13th-15th place game at the end of the slate of games on Saturday, May 6, as the Cavaliers/Wahoos will play to finish in either a tie for 13th or 15th in the final 16-team standings against the loser of the Columbia-Washington University consolation game. Due to time constraints in the 30-game, 16-team tournament, places No. 13 and 15 are not played out and result in ties based on the victors and fallen from the final two games on the second day of competition.
