BALTIMORE, Md. — Andrew Mavis scored a season-high seven goals to lead the No. 20-ranked George Washington University men’s water polo team past host/Division III No. 3 Johns Hopkins University, 21-18, at the Newton White Athletic Center.

The junior who earned All-America honors last season found the net four times in the final quarter to help the Colonials hold off the Blue Jays.

GW leaned on its offense to earn the road victory. After Johns Hopkins tied it at 11-all with 5:11 left in the third quarter, the Colonials scored five of the next six goals to assert control.

Andras Levai scored two goals in quick succession and Mavis’ tally 20 seconds into the fourth made it 16-12. The Blue Jays never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.

Atakan Destici registered four goals and four assists, Levai pitched in four goals three assists and Jack Kerwin added four goals to equal his career high set in last Sunday’s win at Fordham University. Zach Slaughter and Nick Schroeder also scored for the Colonials.

First-year Henry Maas also put together a strong performance in the victory with three assists, two steals and a field block. Austin Pyrch went the distance in net, tallying 13 saves for the Buff and Blue.
