LEBANON, Ill. — The Carthage College women’s water polo team dropped a 15-8 game at McKendree University.

Carthage – which falls to 2-15 on the season – never led as McKendree (18-6) claimed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in rolling to victory.

Trailing 9-0 in the second quarter, Mak Werner scored for the Firebirds with 3:35 on the clock to put Carthage on the scoreboard.

In the third quarter, the Bearcats and the Firebirds both scored three goals to make the score 12-4. Werner (two) and Xiomara Trejo tallied goals for the Firebirds in the frame.

The Firebirds chipped away at the final deficit in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Bearcats by a 4-3 count. Grace Steinberg had two goals with 6:52 and 4:48 remaining in regulation. Following a response by McKendree at 4:14, Brenna Carstens (2:55) and Aubrey Korzyniewski (2:17) delivered the Firebirds’ final scoring blows before the Bearcats delivered the final coffin nail with 1:02 left in regulation for the seven-goal win.

The Firebirds collected 25 shots and 10 exclusions in the contest.

Werner lead the Firebirds in shots (five) and goals (two), while goalkeeper Rylee McGee recorded eight saves
