MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mount St. Mary’s University fell to No. 19-ranked the United States Naval Academy, 16-7, in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action and dropped a 15-8 decision to McKendree University on the first day of the 2023 Salem Invitational hosted by Salem University at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
Against Navy, the Mountaineers kept pace with the Midshipmen to trail 5-4 after a quarter of action.
Navy began to take control of the game in the second after tallying four goals to the Mount’s one and entering halftime with a 9-5 lead.
The Mountaineers came out of the break unable to convert on their six-on-five opportunities as they converted only one of the seven chances to the Midshipmen’s three-for-four performance. Navy kept control the rest of the way resulting in a 16-7 loss for the Mount.
Facing McKendree, the Mountaineers were outscored 5-4, 4-2, 4-2 and 2-0 over the span of the contest as the Bearcats acquired an early lead and kept Mount St. Mary’s in check.
