STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Nicolas Butelet (Sr., Paris, France/Willow Glen) of the Wagner College men’s water polo team added to his trophy case as he was named the 2020-21 Wagner Male Team Student-Athlete Merit Award recipient.

Each year, the Seahawks’ athletic department recognizes the male team and female team student-athletes with the highest grade point averages who have graduated and exhausted their eligibility.

The 2021 Female Team Student-Athlete Merit Award winner is Tiffany Hanna of the track & field program, who garnered a 3.98 grade point average (GPA) while majoring in Economics. Butelet is the recipient of the 2021 Male Team Student-Athlete Merit Award for posting a 3.98 GPA while majoring in microbiology.

It marks the second award in less than a month for Butelet also claimed the Dr. Natale Colosi Microbiology Award in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in the field of microbiology.

During the 2019 season – as Wagner did not compete in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – Butelet saw action in all 31 matches for the Seahawks while starting eight. He recorded 17 points, which included nine goals on 35 shots and eight assists. Additionally, he tallied 11 steals and two blocks while adding eight drawn exclusions and four sprint victories.  A 2017 graduate from Willow Glen High School in San Jose, Calif., he played for two seasons at West Valley College and helped lead the team to second and third place finishes in California State Championships his freshman and sophomore years, respectively, prior to transferring to Wagner.

Collegiate Water Polo Association
